What is Malaria - Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment

Malaria –

Malaria is life threatening disease. The main cause of malaria is Plasmodium. There are various types of malaria and so malaria treatment varies in great extent.
After examining specific symptoms of malaria, particular treatment is applied.

Malaria is the common disease in many countries including US, UK, Pakistan, India and many more ! There are number of causes of malaria and numerous treatment methods has been introduced in the modern world as there are different types of malaria.

Actually the word malaria is the combination of two words or malaria definition ;

  • ” Mela ” means ” BAD “
  • ” Area ” means ” AIR “

Malaria : Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment, Medications

Step 1: Observation :

Malaria Patient experienced recurring attacks of chills and fevers.

The disease is more common among the people living in low marshy areas.

Drinking water from marshes does not cause malaria.

These observations did not help much help of solving the problem i.e ” What is the cause of malaria ”

In 1978 a French Physician Leveran examined the blood of a malarial patient under microscope. Fiver year later. the same microorganisms were observed in the blood of malarial patient and these microorganisms were given the name of “Plasmodium“.

Step 2: Hypothesis and Deduction :

Hypothesis :

Biologist further build upon the ancient observation and the of discovery of lerveran. The hypothesis made in this case was

Plasmodium is the cause of malaria ”

Deduction :

Biologist does not know whether his hypothesis is true or not, but he accept it may be true and make deduction. One of the deduction from the above hypothesis was,

If Plasmodium is the cause of malaria , then all malarial patients should have Plasmodium in their blood ”

Step 3: Experiment and Result :

Experiment :

The next step was to test the deduction through experiments which were designed as,

” Blood of 100 malarial patients was examined under microscope. For the purpose of having a control group, the blood of 100 healthy people was also examined under microscope”

Result :

It was observed that all malarial patients had Plasmodium in their blood; whereas the blood of healthy persons was free from Plasmodium.

Step 4: Conclusion :

The results were quite convincing and proved that the hypothesis ” Plasmodium is the cause of Malaria ” was true !

Malaria sign and symptoms typically begin within few weeks after bitten by an infected mosquito.
Malaria is life threatening diseases effecting lots of people per year. Some of the signs and symptoms of malaria infection are :

  • Moderate to severe shaking chills
  • Malarial patients often observe High Fever
  • Patients observes unexpected sweating
  • Head ache is also one of the sign and symptom of malaria
  • Vomiting is also the symptoms of malaria
  • Diarrhea is also seen as the sign and symptoms of malaria

Blood tests can show the presence of parasite and help tailor treatment in determining :

  1. Whether you have malaria.
  2. Which type of malaria parasites is causing your symptom.
  3. If your infection is caused by parasite resistant to certain drugs.
  4. Whether the disease is affecting any of your vital organ.

Some blood tests can take several days to complete while other can produce results in less than 15 minutes only.

The type of drugs and length of treatment will vary, depending upon ;

  1. Which type of malaria parasite you have.
  2. The Severity of your symptoms
  3. Your age
  4. Whether you are pregnant.

Medications :

The most common anti-malarial drugs include :

  • Choloroquine
  • Quinine Sulphate
  • Hydroxycholoroquine
  • Mefloquine
  • combination of atovaquone and proguanil

The history of anti-malarial medicine has been marked by a constant struggle between evolving drug resistant parasites and search for new drug formulations.

In many part of the world, for instance, resistance to choloroguine has rendered the drug ineffective.
