Stomach Ulcer - Definition, Causes, Diagnosis, Treatment

ULCER – An Ulcer in the stomach is known as gastric ulcer and ulcer in the duodenum is known as duodenal ulcer. It is caused by cigarette smoking, Alcoholism and many other factors which is explained in detailed in this article !

Stomach Ulcer – Definition, Causes, Diagnosis, Treatment

Ulcer Definition

The destruction of the lining of the stomach or duodenum is known as peptic ulcer.

The destruction of the mucosal lining of the stomach or duodenum by hydrochloric acid is known as peptic ulcer.

The gastric juice in the stomach contains hydrochloric acid and protein splitting enzyme.

These don’t harm the lining of the stomach because the inner wall of the stomach is covered and protect by mucus secreted by the goblet cells.

The mucus is alkaline which neutralize the acidity.

Sometimes due to the increase secretion of gastric juice and inadequate secretion of mucus, the digestive enzy

me and acid eat away the wall of stomach or duodenum which gets eroded or result in a ” sore ” .

These erosions are known as ulcers and the condition is known as ulceration.

Sometimes the ulcer make a hole in the stomach and the content of stomach pass into the duodenum leading to severe infection, which may proof to be fatal.

Causes Of Ulcer

There are number of causes of ulcers but some of the main causes are mentioned below :

 • Hyper-acidity ( increase production of HCL )
 • Heredity Factor
 • Excessive use of anti-inflammatory medicine such as aspirin etc.
 • Cigarette smoking
 • Psychological stress
 • Prolong worries
 • High blood pressure
 • Use of spicy food
 • Alcoholism
 • Poor secretion of mucus
 • Poor blood supply
 • According to the latest research about 60% of peptic ulcer is caused by a bacterium ” Helicobacter pylori “.
 • The H-pylori is leading cause of peptic acid
 • The H-pylori weakens the stomach defenses by thinning the mucos coating of the stomach , making it more susceptible to the damaging effects of Acid and Pepsin.

Types Of Ulcers

The most common types of ulcers are :

 1. genital ulcers
 2. mouth ulcers
 3. venous ulcers
 4. arterial ulcers

Genital ulcers

Genital ulcers are sores that develop on genital areas, which includes the penis, vagina, anus or surrounding areas.

They are caused by sexually transmitted infections!

Some symptoms  are :

 • pain
 • itching
 • fever

Mouth Ulcer

Mouth ulcers are small sores that develop in your mouth or the base of your gums.

They are common and often go away within two to three weeks. They can be uncomfortable but shouldn’t cause significant pain. If a mouth ulcer is extremely painful or doesn’t go away within two weeks. They you should seek immediate medical attention.

some symptoms are :

 • Diarrhea
 • Lips extended ulcers
 • fever

Venous ulcers

Venous ulcers is the most common type of leg ulcers

This type is  open wounds often forming on your leg, below your knee and on the inner area of your ankle.

symptoms you may experience include:

 • inflammation
 • swelling
 • itchy skin
 • discharge

Arterial ulcers

Arterial ulcers develop from damage to the arteries due to lack of blood flow to tissue.

Arterial ulcers is actually open sores developed on outer side on your foot or ankle.

Symptoms includes :

 • red, yellow and sometimes black sores
 • hairless skin
 • leg pain
 • no bleeding

Diagnosis of Ulcer

Ulcer diagnosis can be done by the following test :

 • Endoscopy
 • Andominal ultrasound
 • Blood test for H.Pylori

Treatment of Ulcer

Ulcer treatment is short , means can take upto 2 weeks but no more than it !

 •  In the case of H.pylori infection, a two week course of treatment called triple therapy consisting of two anti-biotic are used to kill the bacteria.
 • Anti-acid drugs may be used.
 • Not to use spicy and acidic food.

Conclusion :

Every disease has different causes and symptoms and definitely there are treatment for it in this modern world.

If treatment is followed in the organised manner, a person can be cure as soon as possible ! It is proven result !

Effects Of Smoking On Your Body

Effects of Smoking on Your Body

Smoking is a health problem of high relevance and the main preventable cause of death worldwide. Smoking has established as risk main factor for developing of chronic obstructive pulmory diseases , cancer and atherosclerosis among other non – communicable diseases, being the main causes of death associated to smoking. Therefore, there are various effects of smoking on your body !

Cigarette is a mix of more than 4000 constituents in which are found different chemical products.

Recent research has identified some components of cigarette and its adverse effects such as nicotine, ammonaic, acrolein, phenols, acetaldehyde , N- nitrosamine, benzoprine, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrogen cyanine, polonium, radium and thorium.

All of them with adverse effects for health of those who are exposed to them.

Cardiovascular risk associated to smoking

Effects of smoking on your body begins with this first risk that is causing of cardiovascular disease !

Smoking is one of the main causes of atherosclerotic disease and it is considered one of the main risk factors for coronary arterial disease in combination with arterial hypertension and lipid profile abnormalities.

This finding is especially relevant given that cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death in developed countries.

The two main physio pathological mechanism related to coronary arterial disease are atherosclerosis and thrombosis.

Atherosclerosis implies endothelial damage, profilation of muscle cells in the itmal layer.

For its part , thrombosis, which generates acute occlusion of blood vessel in the place of fractured atherosclerotic plaque, is the final point of most of the coronary problems.

It also effects your body’s metabolism process. In short, effects of smoking are uncountable !!

Smoking is the main factor of endothelial lesion, which in turn is predecessor of atherosclerosis.

It has been proved that nicotine shows a scaling effect on endothelial, probably as consequence of shear stress increasing blood viscosity and heart rate increase, cardiac output , blood pressure related to smoking.

Besides damage by mechanic effects, poly-cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons presented in cigarette, induce chemical damage.

Smoking also induces vascular smooth muscle proliferation inducing larger plaque adhesion into the endothelium injured.

The main effects related to smoking are generated as consequence of sympathetic autonomous nervous system activation.

Cardiovascular Coronary arterial diseases,

cerebral vascular disease

Respiratory Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Lung cancer
Neoplasms Pulmonary

Reproductive Infertility

Low birth-weight

Fetal death

Others Osteoporosis

Effects of smoking includes increases in heart rate, blood pressure, cardiac output and vasoconstriction, contributing to the highest demand of oxygen !

Carbon monoxide present in smoking reduces the capacity of oxygen transport.

Effects Of Smoking On Your Body
Etiology and Risk Factors

Smoking also induces coronary spasm, promoting myocardial ischemia presence.

Smoking is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. This habit promotes serum increasing of the whole cholesterol.

Similarly, smokers show higher serum levels of triglycerides than non-smokers!!

Smoking induces alterations in the metabolism of lipoprotiens, reduces the distensibility of arterial walls.

Carbon Monoxide Prevent transport and use of oxygen
Hydrocyanic Acid Cytotoxin, Irritating
Acetaldehyde Cytotoxin, Irritating
Acerolein Cytotoxin, Irritating
Ammoniac Cytotoxin, Irritating
Formaldehyde Cytotoxin, Irritating
Vinyl Chloride Carcinogen
Hydraxin Carcinogen
Nitrogen Oxide Cytotoxin, Irritating

Nicotine Addictive drug, stimulant and depressant neuroendocrine
Phenol Carcinogen and irritating
Cresol Carcinogen and irritating
Napthylamine Carcinogen
Benzopireno Carcinogen
Trace metals Carcinogen
Indol Tumor accelerator
Catechol Carcinogen
Cabazole Tumor accelerator

Smoking and Diabetes

The increased cardiovascular risk associated to smoking increases the cardiovascular risk pre-existing related to diabetes.

It has been estimated that the risk of smokers and former smokers of the developing diabetes type ( 2 ) is of 49% and 31% larger as compared controls non-smokers, independently of the presence of other factors such as age, corporal mass rate and body composition.

The higher risk related to diabetes to smoking is evidenced in the group of age which is found between 40 to 70 years of both the genders.

Smokers  diabetic patients show higher risk of coronary arterial disease and peripheral arterial disease with the increased of dyslipidemia observed in diabetes.

It is related to higher activity of liver lipase which increases the production of particles LDL.

Even though, the prevalence of smokers has globally decreased. It is not an observe change in diabetic population, However.

Consumption of cigarette by hour during 6 hours is keenly associated to the reduction of insulin sensitivity. It reduces the peripheral catchment of glucose!

Effects Of Smoking On Your Body

The consumption of 4 cigarette in one hour is associated to affinity reduction of insulin with its receptor.

Smokers are more resistant to mediated glucose uptake by insulin and show larger insulinemia after an oral charge of glucose.

Insulin resistance observed in smoking is indeed responsible of reduction of serum levels of HDL.

The vasoconstriction related to smoking reduces muscle blood flow and promotes the resistance to insulin.

The chemical components might have direct effect on lungs, pancreases and liver of human body. IT affects cells B function.

HvAIC is another factor which is found in smokers , it is higher is non-diabetic smokers than in former smokers and even less in individuals who have ever smoked!

The higher amount of cigarette consumed daily, the higher is risk of HbAIC, lungs diseases and other dangerous diseases.

Effects of smoking are further extended to Pulmonary Diseases!

Smoking and Pulmonary Diseases

Smoking is the main cause of pulmonary diseases. The people who takes 1 packet of cigarette every day are highly affected by this disease !

Research shows that pulmonary disease ( caused due to smoking ) is the fifth cause of death in developed countries and major death are as a result of this smoking !

Effects Of Smoking On Your Body
Effects Of Smoking On Your Body

Pulmonary Disease is 4-25 times higher in smokers than non-smokers.

Smokers induces a series of pathophysiological changes in airways that is :

 • In epithelelium of main airways promotes the loss of cilia, hyperplasia of mucous glands and increase number of globose cells.
 • The smallest airways of smokers show inflamation and atrophy, metaplasia of globose cells.

Immune function alterations promote the disease progression and pulmonary damage in smokers.

The next effects of smoking on the body is measured as CANCER.

Cancer and Smoking

Cancer is the second cause of death in many developed countries.

Types of cancers caused due to smoking are found 50% in men while 25% in women.

Smoking is the main cause of lung cancer. Among 80 and 90% of neoplasia is attributed to the cause.

The risk of developing lung cancer increases with smoking intensity and also length of the habit of smoking.

The risk of cancer is around 4 times for a person who consumes 1-9 cigarettes per day, 11 times for persons who consume 1 package per day and the risk becomes 20 times higher for those who consume 2 or more package per day.

Effects Of Smoking On Your Body
Effects Of Smoking On Your Body

When smoking is stopped, the risk slowly decreases. Requiring 10 years for reducing the risk presented at the moment of stopping risk.

The risk of developing lung cancer never returns to non-smokers, achieving a reduction until a minimum of 2 times when comparing to non-smokers.

The Effects Of Smoking is now explained in terms of gastrointestinal disorders!

Smoking and Gastrointestinal Disorders

Gastric and ulcers  are more prevalent in smokers than non-smokers.

The relative risk of smokers comparing to non-smokers for gastric ulcers is 4, 1.

The mortality associated with gastric ulcers in smokers os 3 times higher than in non-smokers.

The relationship between peptic ulcer and smoking is highly casual. Smoking limits pancreatic bicarbonate production.

The mortality for hepatic is estimated 5 times higher in smokers than non-smokers!

Similarly, the disease risk of Crohn is 2,1 times higher in smokers comparing to non-smokers.

The last but not the least comes Abdominal Obesity in list of effects of smoking on human body !

Abdominal Obesity and Smoking

Abdominal obesity is associated with atherogenic profile, being a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, diabetes type 2 , cerebral vascular incidents and mortality for all causes independently.

The ideal method to determine abdominal obesity is the abdominal perimeter measures by its high correlation.

Smokers tend to have less body weight and lower rates of body mass than non-smokers.

Smokers might reduce insulin sensibility while increasing circulating levels of antagonistic hormones to insulin as the growth insulin.

Effects Of Smoking On Your Body
smoking kills

Besides it might increase the lipolysis which works in increasing the circulating free fat acids.

Nicotine, carbon monoxide and others associated with smoking plays an important role in the development of insulin resistance.

Similarly , it has been observed that smoking reduces the activity of lipase lipoprotien.

Components Of Healthy Diet I What Is A Balanced Diet

Components Of Healthy Diet- Balanced Diet

Health remains an important factor for every one. Every person thinks about healthy food and healthy diet and for the
reason adopts healthy eating. But what are the components of healthy food ? So in this article i will write components of
healthy diet in detail :

Like all other organisms, human beings require food to grow, reproduce and maintain good health. Every person required balanced diet in his or her life of maintenance of good health. The following are the major components of human food.

Carbohydrates are the major source of energy. They contain the elements carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. we obtain most of our carbohydrate in the form of starch.

This is found in rice, potato, bread and cereals. Our digestive system turn this starch into simpler carbohydrate called glucose. Blood carries glucose to all cells, where it is used in respiration for energy.

If a gram of carbohydrate is fully oxidized it produces about four calories of energy. The glucose which is not used by seeks is converted into glycogen that is stored in the muscles and liver.

The body’s glycogen storage capacity is limited , so any unused glucose is converted to fat.

“The simple answer as to why we get fat is that carbohydrates make us so; protein and fat do not”

Proteins are required for growth and repair. Proteins are made up of simple unites call amino acids. There are over 20 different types of amino acid. An amino acid contains carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sometimes sulphur. Protein are large molecules so they can not get directly into blood. They are broken into amino acid by our digestive system. Cells can convert amino acid back to protein.

Proteins are essential components of the cytoplasm, membranes and organelles. They are also the major parts of muscles, ligaments and tendons. Protein can also be used as source of energy. One gram of protein contains 4 kilo-calories of energy.

Plant sources of proteins are beans, pulses, cereals, and dry fruits, whereas, animal sources include cheese, milk, poultry, fish, mutton and beef.

Famous Protein quote :

“Skin is made in large measure of a protein called collagen “

Fats ( Lipids )

Fats belong to a group of organic compound called lipids. They are made of fatty acids and glycerol. They contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.

Fats serve both metabolic and structural functions. When the body has used up the carbohydrates, it oxidizes fats to great energy. one gram of fats provide 9 kilo-calories of energy.

Fats are stored in the cells of adipose tissue ( fatty tissue ).This tissue is present beneath the skin and around important organs. It insulates organs against shocks and also maintains body temperature.

Other functions of fats include maintaining healthy skin and hair. Fats help in the digestion, transport of vitamins A,D,E and K in the body. The common sources of fats are butter, ghee, cheese , meat, egg yolk, milk , nuts etc.

Vitamins are organic food substances found only in living things. With the few exceptions, the body can not manufacture vitamins. They must be supplied by the diet or in dietary supplements.

Vitamins are essential to the normal functioning of our bodies. Vitamins may be divided into two groups : the fat-soluble vitamins ( Vitamins A,D,E, and K ) and the water-soluble vitamins ( vitamins B and in C ). Our bodies can store fat-soluble vitamins and can use them when needed. Water soluble vitamins are not stored in our body. Vitamins family is described below in detail :

a) Vitamin A

Vitamin A is also known as retinol, a name given in reference to its participation in the functions of the retina of the eye. This Vitamin also participates in the functions of the immune system and helps in growth and reproduction.

Dietary deficiency of vitamin A may cause vision problems and night blindness. Vitamin A deficiency can also affect growth, skin and immune system.

Animal sources of vitamin A are chicken liver, cod liver oil, eggs, butter, milk etc.

Plant sources of vitamin A are sweet potatoes, carrots , spinach, mangoes, oranges, grapefruit etc.

b) Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)

Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin. It is needed for the growth and repair of body tissues. It helps the body to make collagen, an important protein in skin, cartilage, tendons, ligaments and blood vessels. Vitamin C is essential for healing wounds and for repairing and maintaining bones and teeth.

Signs of vitamin C deficiency include drying and splitting of hair, inflammation and bleeding of gums, rough, dry and scaly skin, decreased wound healing, nosebleeds and a decreased ability to fight infection.A severe form of vitamin C deficiency is known as scurvy. Sources of vitamin C are tomatoes, strawberries, broccoli, cabbage, guava etc.

c) Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin. it aids in the absorption of calcium, helping to form and maintain strong bones. The major function of vitamin D is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. It is also made by the skin. When ultraviolet rays from sunlight strike the skin, they trigger vitamin D synthesis.

Due to deficiency of vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle and soft. In children, vitamin D deficiency leads to rickets (a condition in which bones weaken and bow under pressure). In adults, vitamin D deficiency causes osteomalacia mean “soft bones” thus increasing the risk for features in bones. Main sources of vitamin D are cod liver oil, egg yolk, fortified bread, cheese etc.

Minerals are inorganic elements that originate in the earth and cannot be made in the body. They play important role in various body functions. Most of the minerals in the human diet come directly from plants, animals and water.

The minerals required in the amount of 100 mg ( milligrams ) or more per day are called major minerals e.g sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and sulfur.

The minerals in the amounts less than 100 mg per day are called trace minerals e.g iron, zinc , copper, chromium, fluoride, iodine, selenium, manganese and molybdenum.

a. Role of Calcium

Calcium is one of the most important and most abundant minerals in the human body. It plays an important role in the development and maintenance of the bones.

Calcium is also needed for  tooth formation. It plays an important role in blood clotting, transmission of nerve impulses , muscle contraction, and other metabolic activities.

Dairy products are the major source of calcium. Eggs, green leafy vegetables, broccoli, leguments , nuts and whole grains provide calcium but in smaller amount than dairy products.

b. Role of Iron

Iron is an important mineral. It is a part of hemoglobin molecule, which helps the red blood cells to transport oxygen to the cells of the body. Iron also helps the immune and central nervous systems.

The main sources of iron are red meat, fish, beans, dried fruit, green vegetables and apple.

Dietary Fibers

Dietary fibers is also known as ” roughage ” or ” bulk “. It is the part of human food that is indigestible. It mainly of cellulose and is found in vegetables, fruits and cereals. Dietary fibers move unaltered through the digestive system.

There are two types of dietary fibers ; insoluble and soluble.

Insoluble fibers do not dissolve in water and travels through the small intestine quickly. Wheat bran, whole gran breads and cereals, as well as the skins of many fruits and vegetables , contain insoluble fibers.

Soluble fibers break down as it passes passes through the digestive track, forming a gel that traps harmful substances e.g cholesterol. Oats, beans, barley and many fruits and vegetables contain soluble fibers.

Dietary fibers speed up the passage of food through the gut. So it reduces the risk of constipation and colon so controls the blood cholesterol level.

Water is the most abundant substance in the human body. We have about 70% water in our body. Water performs many functions. Some are following :

 • In our bodies, metabolic reactions can only occur when the reactants are dissolved. Water acts as the solvent for reactants of metabolism.
 • The water present if blood dissolves oxygen from lungs. In this way, oxygen is transported to cells. Carbon dioxide is transported from cells to lungs in the same way. Similarly, water carries nutrients from digestive system to all cells of the body.
 • Almost every cell in the body is bathed in interstitial fluid which is almost entirely water.
 • Water acts as reactant in many metabolic reactions e.g. in hydrolysis reactions.
 • Water is great stabilizer of body temperature. It absorbs and releases heat very slowly.
 • Water also acts as lubricating medium. It is the major part of mucous and other lubricating fluids.
 • Water is the flushing medium for the remove of toxic chemicals e.g. Urea through kidneys.

3 Bodybuilding Workouts At Home :

15-Minute Full-Body Home Workout :

 1. Superset :
 2. Pushups: 3 sets, 15-20 reps
 3. Bodyweight Squat: 3 sets, 15-20 reps
 4. Triset :
 5. Dumbbell Bicep Curl: 3 sets, 15-20 reps
 6. Tricep Dumbbell Kickback: 3 sets, 15-20 reps
 7. Dumbbell Shoulder Press: 3 sets, 15-20 reps
 8. Superset :
 9. Dumbbell Shrug: 3 sets, 15-20 reps
 10. Bent Over Two-Dumbbell Row: 3 sets, 15-20 reps

Push-Up

 • “For me, a good rep range is usually 15-20. I think ideally for you, wherever that really good burn starts to set in, or you finish that last rep and you’re feeling that pump, that’s a good place to stop”.

 • The positioning of your hands will affect how much you feel this in your chest versus your tris and shoulders, so pick one that focuses on your weak points! And be sure you’re moving through the full range of motion and not cutting reps short.

Bodyweight Squat

 • Slowing down this movement to really feel those muscles working. Push your knees outward to help engage the glutes and hamstrings more, and squeeze your quads at the top. Keeping good form here will carry over into weighted squats, so take these seriously!

Dumbbell Curl

 • There are many ways you can perform the dumbbell curl, and Bliton prefers the neutral grip into a supinated curl, rotating the dumbbells as you move them up. Bring the dumbbells straight up toward your front delts, keeping your elbows at your sides and feeling the squeeze at the top of the movement. Your body should be rigid as you go through your reps, never swinging in motion along with them.

Do 10 reps of each move at a weight where the last few reps are challenging, but still allow you to keep proper form.  Stick to 1 set of each move to start with. Once you start feeling like you are completing this workout without much challenge build in an additional set of each move.

After you are doing two sets of each move and the workout is no longer a challenge, increase the weight you are lifting a little bit (2.5 to 5 lbs) to make sure you are always challenging the muscle.  Remember to not go too heavy though so you can ensure you keep your form!

Do this workout twice a week, giving your muscles plenty of time to recover between workouts.  This recovery is when your muscles are reconditioning to be ready for more lifting.

But if you follow the flexible game plan I’ve laid out for you, you’ll see fantastic results in your physique, performance, and overall health.

All these Bodybuilding Workouts can be easily done at home but of you do hard work and do it on regular basis.
