ULCER – An Ulcer in the stomach is known as gastric ulcer and ulcer in the duodenum is known as duodenal ulcer. It is caused by cigarette smoking, Alcoholism and many other factors which is explained in detailed in this article !

Ulcer Definition 

The destruction of the lining of the stomach or duodenum is known as peptic ulcer.


The destruction of the mucosal lining of the stomach or duodenum by hydrochloric acid is known as peptic ulcer.


The gastric juice in the stomach contains hydrochloric acid and protein splitting enzyme.

These don’t harm the lining of the stomach because the inner wall of the stomach is covered and protect by mucus secreted by the goblet cells.

The mucus is alkaline which neutralize the acidity.

Sometimes due to the increase secretion of gastric juice and inadequate secretion of mucus, the digestive enzy


me and acid eat away the wall of stomach or duodenum which gets eroded or result in a ” sore ” .

These erosions are known as ulcers and the condition is known as ulceration.

Sometimes the ulcer make a hole in the stomach and the content of stomach pass into the duodenum leading to severe infection, which may proof to be fatal.

Causes Of Ulcer 

There are number of causes of ulcers but some of the main causes are mentioned below :

  • Hyper-acidity ( increase production of HCL )
  • Heredity Factor
  • Excessive use of anti-inflammatory medicine such as aspirin etc.
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Psychological stress
  • Prolong worries
  • High blood pressure
  • Use of spicy food
  • Alcoholism
  • Poor secretion of mucus
  • Poor blood supply
  • According to the latest research about 60% of peptic ulcer is caused by a bacterium ” Helicobacter pylori “.
  • The H-pylori is leading cause of peptic acid
  • The H-pylori weakens the stomach defenses by thinning the mucos coating of the stomach , making it more susceptible to the damaging effects of Acid and Pepsin.

Types Of Ulcers

The most common types of ulcers are :

  1. genital ulcers
  2. mouth ulcers
  3. venous ulcers
  4. arterial ulcers

Genital ulcers

Genital ulcers are sores that develop on genital areas, which includes the penis, vagina, anus or surrounding areas.

They are caused by sexually transmitted infections!

Some symptoms  are :

  • pain
  • itching
  • fever

Mouth Ulcer 

Mouth ulcers are small sores that develop in your mouth or the base of your gums.

They are common and often go away within two to three weeks. They can be uncomfortable but shouldn’t cause significant pain. If a mouth ulcer is extremely painful or doesn’t go away within two weeks. They you should seek immediate medical attention.

some symptoms are :

  • Diarrhea
  • Lips extended ulcers
  • fever

Venous ulcers

Venous ulcers is the most common type of leg ulcers

This type is  open wounds often forming on your leg, below your knee and on the inner area of your ankle.

symptoms you may experience include:

  • inflammation
  • swelling
  • itchy skin
  • discharge

Arterial ulcers

Arterial ulcers develop from damage to the arteries due to lack of blood flow to tissue.

Arterial ulcers is actually open sores developed on outer side on your foot or ankle.

Symptoms includes :

  • red, yellow and sometimes black sores
  • hairless skin
  • leg pain
  • no bleeding

Diagnosis of Ulcer 

Ulcer diagnosis can be done by the following test :

  • Endoscopy
  • Andominal ultrasound
  • Blood test for H.Pylori


Treatment of Ulcer 

Ulcer treatment is short , means can take upto 2 weeks but no more than it !

  •  In the case of H.pylori infection, a two week course of treatment called triple therapy consisting of two anti-biotic are used to kill the bacteria.
  • Anti-acid drugs may be used.
  • Not to use spicy and acidic food.
